Why Does This Matter More at the Top?
Recent SHRM research found that 71% of workers believe critical thinking is more important now because of AI, and 63% feel AI tools push them to analyze information more deeply, a signal that the demand for judgment is rising precisely as the tools for generating fast answers multiply.
On their own, SHRM's 2026 learning and development benchmarking revealed that critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making are the skills with the highest levels of importance among the next five years of skills that organisations will be developing.
Over half (52%) of C-suite leaders say they are already noticing the erosion of skills in their business, and over 60% said it will become a material risk in three to five years. The top three capabilities rated as most critical by leaders are the same as those identified by the research as being most exposed, namely: judgment, problem framing, and creative thinking. Almost 90% cite one culprit: Teams taking AI output without running it through stress tests.

Before evaluating a recommendation, name what everyone in the room is treating as settled fact. Most flawed decisions aren't the result of bad analysis; they're built correctly on a premise nobody examined.

In an urgent situation, the leader will ask what we should do, instead of what problem we are solving. Any badly worded question will result in the proper execution of a wrong answer. Slow the framing down before speeding the analysis up.
