Mistakes to avoid in Hiring

The Unprepared Candidate:

Make available to the candidate as much non confidential information as possible about your company. How your candidate utilizes the material will be a valuable tool in your assessment of his/her potential.

Overly Narrow Specifications:

Employers often establish specifications for candidates that are limiting to the point of occasionally ignoring appropriate skills and experience gained in other industries and/or roles.

Reference Checking:

Never assume that everything is as it appears. Hiring the wrong person is terribly costly in so many ways. Multiple thorough reference checks must always be performed.

Being your own Headhunter:

Remember when paying for a data base of candidates, no matter how specialized the base is, it will still be comprised of people who are in a limited universe of available talent.

Entice the talent outside in a broader pool of candidates.

For your global staffing needs, consider our Taplow Group partners, located in offices throughout Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Our associates are highly skilled professionals. Many, like our firm, also offer interim management services at the mid and senior levels.

Are you prepared for
"Good Times"

As you assess your company's position in the market, are you taking care of your high potential employees?
Those individuals are the foundation for the future of your company.

Reminders:

Ensure that your stars receive the training necessary to succeed in their current job- as well as future opportunities.

Create an atmosphere that rewards innovation and well thought out risk taking.

Continuously recognize positive performance. Link accountability with performance.

Stretch your staff, challenge them to perform beyond their expectations.

Verbally acknowledge the good work.

Take the time to ask for and listen to their opinions, and then publicly recognize their contributions.

Are you developing and encouraging mentors in your organization? Having a coach and sounding board can be the springboard to success.

Developing and maintaining an effective succession plan is essential in keeping your high potential employees, and ensuring that you are positioned for growth and ready to properly fill unexpected vacancies.
